Notes: Conscripted peasants thrown into service, possessing little armor and armed with a yari (pike). Cheap, light infantry that often is the staple unit of a daimyo's army. Ashigaru are not bound by Bushido, so do not expect them to be as brave as samurai!

While they are relatively flimsy in melee combat, Light Samurai have the invaluable ability to launch storm after deady hailstorm of arrows into the enemy ranks. Beware, however: friendly fire is a great way to help your opponent win, so be careful where you let your shafts loose!

The "long arm of the law", Yari Samurai are sturdy but much slower than most other infantry units. These pikemen are perfect to skewer enemy cavalry with; don't use them to chase down archers... unless you'd like a whole regiment of pincushions.

Samurai shock troopers designed for mad blitzes across the field. These two-handed swordsman are great for shattering formations but poor in terms of defense.

Notes:
A Light Samurai attached to a horse. Rather weak in close combat, but the ideal unit for harrying the enemy's flank and cutting down slower ground units thanks to its speed and manueverability. Not bad for dragooning routed infantry, though, given they don't have have spears.

The elite of any samurai army, Heavy Cav can decimate the enemy's ranks while still being defensively solid. Can only be stopped by yari, arrow, or musket ball, but their toughness detracts severly on their speed and agility.

Long-range gunpowder unit with much better effectiveness at distance than bowmen. Their shot can be stopped only by the strongest armor, but Teppu Ashigaru are very weak in close combat.
